The Portuguese brand DR. BAYARD® was founded in 1949, emerging from a story of friendship and gratitude rooted in the Second World War. Álvaro Justino Matias, originally from Vale da Mula, in the municipality of Almeida, moved to Lisbon at a young age, where he began working in a grocery shop and met a French refugee named Dr Bayard. During the difficult years of the conflict, Álvaro helped his new friend adapt to life in Portugal and, before returning to France, the doctor entrusted him with the formula for his soothing throat lozenges, a legacy that would later become a Portuguese business venture. Growing demand led to the industrialisation of production and the establishment of a factory in Amadora, from where the lozenges were distributed to grocery shops, cafés, pastry shops and pharmacies across the country. Preserved by the Matias family over three generations, the Portuguese brand DR. BAYARD® continues to follow the recipe at the heart of its identity, producing lozenges with ingredients such as sugar, glucose, honey, marshmallow root and herbal syrup. More than a traditional product, it represents an emotional memory shared by successive generations of Portuguese people, combining family continuity, national production and a communication strategy capable of renewing a historic heritage without compromising its authenticity. With an established presence in everyday life and Portuguese popular culture, the Portuguese brand DR. BAYARD® stands as an example of business longevity, built on trust, tradition and the ability to carry a legacy of more than seven decades into the future.
