The Portuguese brand MALÁPIO® is a family-run, artisanal project based in Aguada de Baixo, Águeda, in the Bairrada region, reviving the ancestral tradition of vinifying in century-old clay amphorae inherited from Roman and medieval times. Led by Romeu Martins, who honours the craft of his grandfather Aristides, it works with amphorae lined only with beeswax and pine resin, following a philosophy of minimal intervention and low sulphite use. The MALÁPIO® brand produces skin-contact wines from very old, high-density vineyards, using traditional varieties such as Bical, Baga, Cercial, Bastardo, Rabo de Ovelha, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Maria Gomes, Trincadeira and Bicalinho, with no herbicides and natural practices that authentically express Bairrada’s terroir. The Portuguese brand MALÁPIO® has Vinho de Talha as its signature, with fermentation and maturation in large clay amphorae that ensure prolonged contact with skins and solids, resulting in distinctive structure, colour and complexity. The MALÁPIO® brand offers a wine-tourism service with guided visits to the century-old cellar and the medieval vineyard, crossed by a stream, where it provides detailed explanations of the talha method and traditional viticulture.
