BRAND MOAGEM CARLOS VALENTE®

Helena Resende, granddaughter of Carlos Valente, and Mário Nunes are the faces at the front of the Portuguese brand of flours MOAGEM CARLOS VALENTE®. Graduates in hotel management, at a time when there was no job in that area, they took the decision to continue this historic company in Vale de Ílhavo – an inheritance from Helena’s grandfather. In this way, they are the fifth generation of the family to be at the forefront of the brand MOAGEM CARLOS VALENTE® and to hand-grind flour in stone millstones. Due to the age of its founder, the mill had been closed for four years. In the beginning, it was he who, despite his advanced age, helped them with all the information and technique necessary for the functioning of the machines and stone grinders. Since she was a little girl, Helena came to the mill to help. However, the whole process, step-by-step, only got to know it fully when they decided to take up the business. Her grandfather, already with some difficulty, managed to teach them how to make the machines and gears work, how to chop the grindstones, and how to discover the sensory characteristics of the raw material, that is, how to feel the flour. Starting from scratch is difficult, but they had a great master. Unfortunately, Helena’s grandfather died 15 days before the mill opened fully. Although he had not been given the pleasure of seeing the brand MOAGEM CARLOS VALENTE® in operation, he knew that they continued it, that they kept their legacy, and he was certainly very happy.
