BRAND LABORATÓRIO D’ESTÓRIAS®

Tell the story of a different Portugal. It is with this spirit of mission that, in June 2013, the Portuguese brand LABORATÓRIO D’ESTÓRIAS® appears – an experimental design space that aims to be inspired by the stories of Portuguese popular culture to reinvent traditional objects, using them to tell new stories and, why not, to recreate the country’s own history. In this LABORATÓRIO D’ESTÓRIAS® even the technique tells a story – and this takes us to the beginning of the 19th century, more concretely between 1820-1853, where a ceramist named Maria dos Cacos would become the first of a long tradition of baristas and potters from Caldas. There is little information on the subject, but bowls, bottles and toothpickers would come out of his ceramic factory, bathed in green and honey-colored glaze with drains, which will have become popular and sold at fairs across the country. Nowadays, with the closure of several factories in Caldas and an increasingly industrialized tableware manufacturing process, this ancestral technique is a story that threatens to be lost forever. And it is in an attempt to preserve this knowledge that the brand LABORATÓRIO D’ESTÓRIAS® also finds a reason for being, recovering and valuing the painting techniques of the end of the 19th century and early 20th century and the vast tradition of manual technique of Caldas da Rainha, but, at the same time, not excluding the possibility of seeking inspiration from other techniques, perhaps to tell other stories.
