Family-owned and already in its third generation, the Portuguese brand ECOLî is the oldest certified UPA (Artisanal Productive Unit). Located in Manteigas, Serra da Estrela, since 1925 the brand ECOLî follows the whole cycle of Bordaleira sheep wool, from shearing to the final product, on an ecological and sustainable basis. Using traditional processes, it maintains a cultural heritage associated with design. In the heart of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, in the largest glacial valley in Europe – the Glacier Valley of Zêzere, a candidate for World Heritage – lies the village of Manteigas, always associated with wool and its transformation. Region recognized since the 19th century. Due to its intense activity in the wool sector, it enjoys considerable prestige due to the intrinsic quality of its wool, mastery in spinning, keen aesthetic sense of the final product and unavoidable socio-economic impact in an area of low population density where wool has acquired a unique status, synonymous with regional identity. In this context, the brand ECOLî, an artisanal micro enterprise founded at the beginning of the last century, has as its main objective to perpetuate and disseminate this cultural heritage, preserving traditional methods but adapting to current requirements.
