It is in 1918 that the firm Flôres e Couto was born in the city of Porto, which, years later (1931), would be called Couto, Lda. It is at this time that the management of the firm becomes the sole responsibility of Alberto Ferreira do Couto. In 1932, Alberto Ferreira Couto created, with the collaboration of a dentist friend, the Portuguese brand COUTO® Medicinal Paste with the objective of combating gum problems caused by syphilis. And this is how the COUTO® Medicinal Paste quickly becomes the company’s best-known product. Together with its original design and its famous retro packaging that left their mark on Portuguese society in the 20th century, the national fame also came from the famous television spot and the original ads that, for years, have been “in the mouth of all people”! Nowadays, the Couto family remains ahead of the company’s destiny, now by the hand of the administrator Alberto Gomes da Silva, the nephew of the founder and whom he succeeded after his death in 1974. In 2004, and with the designation of Couto, SA, the company left its former facilities in Largo de São Domingos, in Porto, settling in the Utic industrial complex in Vila Nova de Gaia. Using a modern laboratory, but faithful to tradition and the old recipe, the brands COUTO® dental paste continues to be produced in a semi-handmade way, without using animal ingredients and always with the aim of giving its products the best quality, through strict control. The COUTO® Pure Vaseline, COUTO® Deodorant Cream, COUTO® Oxygenated Water, Olex Oil and, of course, one of the most historic products of the brand COUTO® – the Olex Restorer. In 2017, more products were launched, such as COUTO® Hand Cream, COUTO® Soap and COUTO® Moisturizing Cream… And we are sure that many more will follow!
